Funny Stories, All Things Considered

For a quick take-off from the NRA creedo - guns don't kill people, dogs with guns kill people.

I found this story on Yahoo News, and HAD to share it!

It's happened again: A hunting dog has shot its master.

This time, a man in Florida was hit in the thigh by a round from his Remington .308 on Saturday, TBO.com reported.

The culprit was a bulldog named Eli. Authorities told TBO.com that Billy E. Brown, 78, was driving to go deer hunting with a friend on a bumpy road in Pasco County near Tampa when Eli "got excited in the truck" and bumped the rifle. The gun discharged, the bullet hit Brown in the right thigh, and he was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Tampa, said Officer George Wells, spokesman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Brown's condition was not released.

Wells said Brown and the friend were about one-and-a-half miles into the woods when the accident -- if you're buying that the dog didn't mean to do that -- occurred.

The name of Brown's friend was not released. The two have been hunting together for more than 25 years, Wells told TBO.com.

This incident follows one Dec. 1 in which a hunter in Utah was hit in the buttocks by birdshot after his dog stepped on a shotgun laid across the bow of a boat. The Salt Lake City Tribune said the wounded hunter had 27 pellets removed from ... well, you know.

Man's Best Friend. Yeah, right.   :)

Rain Dogs by Tom Waits

I have NO idea what these lyrics mean. I've heard the fella's of the house give thier opinions, but nothing was ever decided.

I just like the title!

Someone give me an umbrella!

Rain Dogs

Inside a broken clock
Splashing the wine
With all the rain dogs
Taxi, we'd rather walk
Huddle a doorway with the Rain Dogs
For I am a Rain Dog, too

Oh, how we danced and we swallowed the night
For it was all ripe for dreaming
Oh, how we danced away
All of the lights
We've always been out of our minds

The rum pours strong and thin
Beat out the dustman
With the rain dogs
Aboard a shipwreck train
Give my umbrella to the Rain Dogs
For I am a Rain Dog too

Oh, how we danced with the
Rose of Tralee
Her long hair black as a raven
Oh, how we danced and you
Whispered to me
You'll never be going back home
You'll never be going back home

Oh, how we danced and we swallowed the night
For it was all ripe for dreaming
Oh, how we danced away
All of the lights
We've always been out of our minds

May you always have someone to rub your belly.....

When a Dog Meets a Dog on a Leash

Yes, someone did a study on dog-walking aggression by sex (owner and dog). There's some good reasoning here, it's kind of a good read. As for me, I just don't like being sniffed there, leash or not.

Guess I'm just weird that way.

Static Dog

So you want a dog. What kind? Are you "on the go" a lot? Are you an older person that, perhaps, doesn't want a dog that will wear you out? Do you have young children that have never been around a dog before? What about health issues? Most breeds can develop breed-specific illnesses over the years.

"Dogs 101"  is a show on the Animal Planet that hilights each breeds specific character traits. This show is GREAT for deciding which breed is best for you and your family. You can click on this link to YouTube to see clips from some of their shows.

Oh, the things people do to their dogs! If I was a long-haired dog, I'm sure my owner, Mr. Bill, would have done this to me!

An Airline Just for Pets!

Sometimes you need to fly us pets somewhere. Whether you are moving across the country or going on a vacation, Pet Airways is the answer!

Pet Airways is for animals only. You can't fly with us pets, but that seems to be the only drawback. There are On-Board Pet Attendants that will look after us the entire flight, every 15 minutes! The cabin is temperature controlled. Experiencing a lay-over? An attendant will take us for walk to stretch his/her legs, take a potty break. And you can track our location, too!

Commercial airlines will put us in the cargo hold. Like your luggage, we can get lost, shipped to the wrong city, experience long delays....

And check this out. From July 2005 to August 2011, 195 animals were reported dead after a flight on commercial airlines, 77 more were injured, and 40 were lost.

Here is the link to Pet Airways, and just in time for the holidays!

Positive Reinforcement and Clicker Training.

Chip is fun, loving, and energetic Chihuahua/Jack Russell Terrier/ Japanese Chin Mix. I adopted him from a shelter and I love him with all of my heart. We do practically everything together like hiking, bike riding, performing tricks together, doing agility together, swimming, etc. Anything the involves being outside, Chip is up for it! Chip has appeared in the local newspaper and is loved by every member of our family. He's a good dog who loves children, adults, and other animals. I love the way his claws pitter-patter across the hardwood floors in our house. He'll lick me until my face hurts and then after a long day of playing and having fun, he'll snuggle up to me under the covers.

We would like to thank Lindsey Ray for the use of her song "Brand New Day".
Here is the video of Chips tricks...

A Home for Nutella

Yesterday, Mom and Son went to the local Petsmart.  Each Saturday, local volunteer animal shelters take thier dogs and cats from 1:00 - 4:00 to try to find homes for these orphaned pets. And Petsmart makes a donation to any group that gets a dog or cat adopted. So that's cool!

V.A.P. was there, and so was Wags to Whiskers. Mom and Son sat with the latter group. Within an hour, Nutella had a home!

Well, now, we know this isn't the norm to have a pet adopted so quickly, but we were all excited to find a home for this beautiful Chocolate Lab! We will be back!

I have a new home!
During the conversations yesterday, we learned:
Someone went to Petsmart recently to have two dogs groomed. That person never came back.

Some dogs are found by real estate agents! People move out of thier home and leave their pets behind.

So given that, here are some needed thank you's....

Thank you, Wags to Whiskers, for letting us sit with your group. You have some beautiful cats and dogs looking for homes!

Thank you, Petsmart, for allowing these shelters into your store!

And thank you, Mona, for all the hard work you do daily to keep these dogs and cats healthy until a home is found!

Woof Report

Scouring the internet for useful information, I came across this website. Most importantly, this article about how to support your local animal shelter.

This website is about all things dog related; from dog care, toys, animal rescue, cute doggy pictures, training tips... this site has it all! Check it out!

One of the scouts from Troop 1377 is working on his Citizenship in the Community Merit Badge. One of the requirements is 8 hours of community service. And what better way to serve your community than by working at your local No Kill Pet Rescue, right?

Cleaning up the area is obvious, but playing with the dogs?

Yes! These puppies have little to no interaction with people except with those that care for them. So by having a scout come by and play with the puppies, the puppies will be a little more used to people, adaptable to a family.

I told The Boy to take some pictures of the scout playing with the dogs, and cleaning up the yard area. But The Boy only took pictures of the puppies. Not like that was a bad thing! I can post more pictures of my friends!

Brindle Beauty

Brindle Beauty - Flower Child

Say hello to Halo, a beautiful German Shepherd/Husky (?) mix. She was found on the side of the road eating garbage. She weighs in at about 45 lbs, and is ready for adoption.

Brindle Beauty and Erminder were mentioned earlier, and would love to be part of your family!

These puppies and others are available for adoption.

Hot Dogs!

We have are having a hotter summer than usual here in Houston, and that's really saying something! Every day the temperature hovers near or over 100 degrees!

If you are like The Dad in my house, you probably get to go ride in the car a lot! But The Dad never leaves me unattended during the summer months.

Here comes the science, courtesy of The Weather Channel:

Days above 90 degrees, especially with high humidity, are inherently dangerous for your pet. Humidity interferes with animals' ability to rid themselves of excess body heat. When we overheat we sweat, and when the sweat dries it takes excess heat with it.

Our four-legged friends only perspire around their paws, which is not enough to cool the body. To rid themselves of excess heat, animals pant. Air moves through the nasal passages, which picks up excess heat from the body. As it is expelled through the mouth, the extra heat leaves along with it. Although this is a very efficient way to control body heat, it is severely limited in areas of high humidity or when the animal is in close quarters.

The shape of an animal's nasal passages can contribute to an animal's tendency to overheat. Brachiocephalic (pug-nosed) dogs are more prone to heatstroke because their nasal passages are smaller and it's more difficult for them to circulate sufficient air for cooling. Overweight dogs are also more prone to overheating because their extra layers of fat act as insulation, which traps heat in their bodies and restricts their breathing capabilities. Age can also be a factor in an animal's tendency to overheat--very young animals may not have a fully developed temperature regulating system, and older pets' organ systems may not be functioning at 100 percent, leaving them prone to heat-related damage.

Cracking the windows doesn't cut it
So where are the danger zones? The most obvious is your car: It can become a death trap even on a mild sunny day--and can insidiously raise the car's temperature to well above 120 degrees! Never, ever leave your pet inside the car. If Fido can't come with you when you get out of the car, leave him at home.

What are some other dangerous situations for your pets? Leaving animals outdoors without shelter is just as dangerous as leaving them inside a hot car. Be sure they are not left in a cage in the hot sun, on a chain in the backyard, or outdoors in a run without sufficient shade or air circulation.

I know that's a lot of words, but this is an important message!

My name is Buddy, and here are a few of my friends Ms. Mona has for adoption...

*******************************************

I am a loyal dog, under two years old, and housebroken. I can fetch, and I walk very well on a leash, and sometimes off!

My name is Urminda.

I am a very small terrier, but very big on personality!
I love people and other dogs, too.
I am housebroken and the vet said I am also ready to be adopted!

Urminda is Spanish for "weasel". Do I look like a weasel? Do I?!

If you can't adopt one of us, Ms. Mona could use some help caring for us. You can send your tax-deductible donations to:

or e-mail Ms. Mona at

Masterpiece Mutts

My name is Buddy, and this is my blog.

I was a rescue dog once. About 9 years ago, the Family chose me over other rescue dogs. And it has been a great life!

I have watched the Son grow from an elementary school child to a college bound young man. I have chased baseballs in Galveston Bay with the Mom, chased wild turkeys in the snows in Northern Ohio and squirrels in the Texas summer heat.

And I've watched a lot of football sitting on the couch with the Dad. Go 'Horns!

I'm one of the lucky ones.

There are quite a few dogs (and yes, cats too) that still need homes. Mona has some. And Mona needs help caring for them.

First of all, Mona needs donations. All donations are tax-deductible, and the money goes for food and medical expenses. You can send your donations to:

Masterpiece Mutts
P.O. Box 253
Porter, Texas 77365

Secondly, the Son did his Boy Scout Eagle Project with Mona when she was with another shelter. She could use some more ambitious scouts to improve and expand the dogs/cats living quarters.

If any Scouts are looking a Project, or if you just want to adopt a pet, you can contact Mona at mmsdogadoptions@gmail.com.

And as for me? In the coming weeks I will be telling you about the dogs Mona has. And I will hi-lite any events (craft shows, Eagle Projects,) that are of particular interest to Masterpiece Mutts.

The Dog Owners Prayer:

Dear God:
Please help me to be half as good as my dog thinks I am.
Amen.
